“Science postdocs perform the science,” Donna Ginther, an economist who studies the science labor market at the University of Kansas, told CNN. Biomedical companies take scientific contributions and, over time, aggregate them into a commercial product. Building on the discovery of mRNA in the 1960’s, the technology behind an mRNA vaccine for humans was in development for decades before the Covid-19 vaccine was first administered in 2020. By using that technology to develop their mRNA vaccines for Covid-19, pharmaceutical companies like Pfizer and Moderna made a windfall in profits. “That’s how they make money is through commercialization: they have a product, which they then patent and sell.”Why are scientists leaving academic labs?

Americans have argued about immigration for decades, often with anger, fear and racial resentment. Decades of neglect and political stalemate have left the American immigration system broken in ways that defy simple solutions. Many are settling in cities far from the border, making an abstract problem suddenly concrete for some Americans. And there was little hope that President Biden might figure out a way out of the morass. Notably, the solutions voters proposed didn’t fit neatly into either party’s ideological box.

Why the CMA blocked the Microsoft-Activision dealThe U.K. CMA efficiently blocked the acquisition in April, saying the deal raises competition concerns in the nascent cloud gaming market. Like other regulators, the CMA is concerned that Microsoft could take Activision games and make them exclusive to its own platforms. Cloud gaming is a technology that enables gamers to access games via remote servers — effectively streaming a game like you would a movie on Netflix. The CMA, Microsoft and Activision now look set to hash out a possible resolution to the regulator's concerns to get a deal over the line. watch nowMicrosoft has already offered concessions to the U.K. regulator which were rejected.

The US isn't prepared for the next pandemic, the outgoing CDC director wrote in a New York Times op-ed. This is partly because local public health systems are still using outdated, unreliable technology. "Some of our public health data systems‌‌ are reliant on old fax machines," Dr. Rochelle Walensky wrote. She concluded with a call for support from the public and US lawmakers in improving public health infrastructure. "It is not enough to support public health when there is an emergency," Walensky wrote.

And by November and December, those predictions appeared to be materializing, when data showed consumers had pulled back during the holiday shopping season. During a month chock full of suprisingly strong economic data, the Commerce Department’s retail sales and consumer spending reports far surpassed expectations. “It’s not sustainable to keep spending above their means.”Eyes on the FedHearty consumer spending at a time like this is a double-edged sword, said Ted Rossman, senior industry analyst for Bankrate and CreditCards.com. “The resilience of consumer spending is probably the biggest thing that’s pushed this recession timetable out,” Rossman said. The Home Depot (HD) warned of flat sales for 2023 as consumers continue shift spending from goods to services.

In late 2021, a wildfire tore through the Boulder suburbs and destroyed nearly 1,100 homes. Roughly 10 months after that blaze, known as the Marshall Fire, the vast majority of the burned lots remain vacant. "Open space with the ability to build what you want — that really doesn't exist in Boulder County," Jennifer Eiss, a Boulder real-estate agent with Compass, said. The median sale price for Marshall Fire lots that sold in the third quarter was $416,000, according to MLS data. Newer, more-sustainable building methods, combined with an emphasis on protective borders around homes, could help mitigate fire risks, Pechet said.
Latinos were 31 percent of the state’s high school graduates that year. But at 31%, the six-year graduation rate for MSU’s Latino students lags far behind CU Boulder, where it was 63 %. On the CU Boulder campus stands a 4-foot-7 memorial to “Los Seis,” six activists, including CU Boulder students, who were killed in two off-campus car bombings in 1974; the killings were never solved. Seventy-two percent, 510, of the middle and high school students enrolled in the program for 2020-21 were Latino. Vela and three other CU Boulder students who spoke with NBC News first learned about the campus through the Aquetza program.
By historical standards, Gen X should be in charge of the US by now. Think of them as the godparents of the "Xennials" — those born in the late 1970s or early 1980s who aren't fully Gen X or millennial. No matter whether you deny the 61-year-old Obama is a boomer, Gen X is starting to get up there in age. Michael Ciaglo-Pool/Getty ImagesWhat's the US missing without a Gen X president? "It's like seeing a ghost that doesn't appear," she said of any expectation the presidency would just suddenly open up for Gen X.
